'KIOCL mining activities affecting park'

UDUPI, July 24 (DHNS)

The head of Pejawar Math, Sri Vishwesha Thirtha, has said mining activities undertaken by the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company (KIOCL) limited was adversely affecting the Kudremukh national park and the surroundng Tungabhadra and Netra rivers and made an impassioned plea to save the park.

Talking to reporters here, the seer said he had written to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee appealing to him to issue directions to stop KIOCL`s mining activities to save the park.

He has also requested the prime minister to ensure that the welfare of KIOCL workers was taken care of by providing them employment in new mining areas or full compensation.
